Visiting the best pediatric dentist in Hingham, MA will help your child maintain healthy teeth as he or she ages. We recommend bringing them in for teeth cleaning twice per year and taking steps to keep baby teeth healthy, just like you would permanent ones. To better understand the importance of baby teeth, it helps to discuss the life of a child's teeth. Here is what you should know:

The first tooth erupts

By their first birthday, most children will have one or several teeth. It is common for parents to worry that their child is not developing teeth as soon as another child they see. As long as teeth are coming in by 1 year of age, it does not matter if the first tooth comes in at 5 or 8 months. What is important is brushing teeth as soon as they do come in. Failing to do so, combined with nighttime feedings, often results in baby bottle tooth decay and a child suffering from unnecessary dental pain as early as 2 years of age.

Baby teeth come in

Most baby teeth will be in place when the child is 3 years old. Again, there is no set time frame for when each tooth must erupt. During this time, it is critical for parents to bring their child in for dental exams and cleanings twice per year. We may also recommend fluoride treatments as a way to strengthen their teeth and reduce the likelihood of them developing cavities. Remember that a child of this age cannot be responsible for brushing their teeth on their own so be sure to do it for them.

Teeth start to fall out

Baby teeth begin to fall out in children who are between 3 and 7 years old, though it is more common to start around the age of 6. Parents have an important role to play during this time by helping children's teeth remain healthy through at-home oral hygiene. Losing baby teeth too early can cause overcrowding, so it is necessary for them to fall out on their own and not due to infection. First molars will also begin to descend during this time.

Permanent teeth come in

Between the ages of 7 and 13, the remaining baby teeth will fall out and permanent teeth will come in; including both sets of molars. Wisdom teeth typically don't descend until later on. This is the stage where we often recommend children wear a mouth guard to protect their teeth when playing sports. We may also make a referral to an orthodontist if we believe that early orthodontic intervention will benefit a patient.

Warning

As the best pediatric dentist, we warn parents of the importance of healthy baby teeth. Baby teeth make it possible for children to develop speech patterns and eat properly. The baby teeth also hold a spot for permanent teeth and when falling out too early, lead to overcrowding problems. Additionally, if a baby tooth becomes infected, that infection can spread to the roots and their permanent teeth, leading to long-term problems.
